Today an international group of printmakers held the social event of the season in Granada. They called it “Impresiones Gigantes” and it created a delightful all-day inky-arty enclave on the city’s Paseo del Salón, the evocative pedestrian boulevard beside Granada’s 16th-century botanical gardens located on the left bank of the River Genil.
The large linocuts, pressed by a road roller, came out surprisingly good. The artists were chuffed to be the protagonists of the day, and the public was surprised and interested. Although the event had no commercial intentions (God forbid!) a few of the visitors insisted upon purchasing some of the work. Mike made a lot of snapshots that you can see in the following album.
But first we should say thank you to Brian Berry, the benevolent Irishman, member of Cork Printmakers, who brought the concept to Granada a few months ago and worked to make it a reality. Thank you Brian, and everybody else who worked on the project. We’re already desiring to see what you’re going to come up with for next year!

Hi Maureen and Mike,
This looks like a lot of fun! Wish I could have been there. What I could see of your linocut, Maureen, it looks great – but is it Celia’s dog…not Celia?
I LOVE the photo of you, Maureen, and Annabelle! I think you two will have fun in the upcoming months!
Miss you – but I got a great print of the Patio of Lindajara with new liquid metal added and a “swosh” of chine cole color last week. Thought of you.
Dear Cathy,
It was a lot of fun and hard work. Starting from 8.30 to 10 at night. My linocut is of one of my little dogs called Loba, with two of her puppies, then in the back ground I put some Acanto leaves and some prickley pears. I only had a few days to do it, Annabel helped me on the Friday afternoon to finish the part of the prickly pears. The following day being the event. I still have to do more work on it. But I was pleased with the result. We printed on different types of cotton material, one of which will end up being a curtain for the Gallineros front door. The original drawing I did about 20 years ago, I made a very small lino of the three dogs which I cut around the shapes and used it as my logo for the portfolios I took to the International graphic fair “Estampa” in Madrid, it looked great. So now I am going to decorate around the bottom of the material three impressions of the small lino. As its almost a meter square I have to cut something off each side to get it through my press.
Would love to see your new print you did with some liquid metal. I think you really got a good idea of how to use it. Chine col gives a nice touch.
I now have a commission to do 135 prints with two solar plates which were made in my studio by two artists from Malaga. They are getting married and want the edition for gifts to their guests. Nice idea.
No who was the young artist who organized the exhibit in Alhendn which you and Mike went to, is going to be my assistant on this edition. His wife has just had a baby girl called “Ama” which means love. He has never done any printmaking before, so I am going to teach him as well as have a helper.
Have to go,
Love to you both,
Maureen
