Brenda Eubank-Ahrens returns to my studio for the fifth (or is it the sixth?) consecutive year with a new group of students from her art class (two of whom were here last year) at the IB School of Bremen, Germany. We both look forward to these visits. It gives so much satisfaction to see young artists blossom in a new setting with new techniques. And the results can be surprising. (You will be able to see the display of their work on Tuesday’s post.)

Lola Higgins arrived at Maureen’s studio a couple of weeks ago, a timid, uncertain recent graduate from the Edinburgh College of Art, the art department of the University of Edinburgh. She had made a few solar prints there but didn’t like neither the process nor the results very much.

Lola´s plan was to reproduce some of her photographs as high quality solarplate prints. When Maureen suggested going beyond mere reproduction, to start from scratch with freehand drawing in India ink on a laser acetate, Lola’s reaction was: “Draw? I can’t draw!”

With a little bit of encouragement Lola started drawing and never stopped. She went from strength to strength and, with Maureen’s help, turned her drawings into stunning solarplate prints. She finished up after 10 days with a portfolio with which the maestra affirms she should start visiting galleries in London, her home town. (See photos of the prints on the drying racks below.)

After Lola left, Maureen said to an artist friend, “I d0n’t think I’ve ever seen a young artist make so much progress in so little time.”

Boston printmaker, Dave McDonnell, in Maureen Booth's printmaking studio in GranadaThe McDonnells, Dave Sr. and Jr., were here last week from Boston. Maureen’s studio en the Sierra Nevada foothills outside Granada was just one more stop on Dave senior’s longtime quest for the great photogravure print. The novelty of Maureen’s approach this time was that they were going to use solar plates to create images based on four-color CMYK separations. It was an experiment for all concerned. (more…)

Maureen Booth is the master printmaker who has published what some fine-art-printmaking insiders consider to be the finest printmaking tutorials on the Web. She affirms, “Making videos is like making prints. The process is essentially the same. You just try to do it better every time.”

Q/ How did you happen to embark on this printmaking-learning-videos project, Maureen? Did you have sponsorship or institutional backing of some sort?
A/ Something of that sort would have been nice, but instead of growing old waiting for it to happen, video producer, Juan Carlos Romera, and I planned and executed the whole thing ourselves, and my husband, Mike, is doing the Internet promotion. The Printmaking Master Classes project was actually Juan Carlos’s idea. He’s been fascinated with etching ever since we shot some scenes of his short film, “Bive,” in my studio seven or eight years ago. That was my first experience in front of a camera. I played an English printmaker who falls in love with a Spanish fisherman. (more…)

Lorna Burden's article on solar-plate printmaking with Maureen Booth

Lorna and Maureen review Lorna's production of solar-plate prints.Lorna Burden, the Australian printmaker and art student, who was here working with me in the month of March, has published an account of her experience in On the Edge, a new magazine “a collaborative effort of the Advanced Diploma of Creative Product Development Students of NMIT (Northern Melbourne Institute of Technical and Further Education.“) The content ranges from original art to art-travel experiences, essays and music commentary.

Lorna’s article is very generous, both with me and with the solar-plate printmaking process, which she took to like a duck to a goldfish bowl. Though she was only here for three days, en route to England to visit family, she took home a portfolio of  lovely solar-plate prints with which she took some delight in surprising her fellow NMIT students. She’s promised to come back next year for a longer stay. We’ll see if we can conjure up some more surprises.

The Chicago Girlz in Maureen Booth's studio in GranadaThe Chicago Girlz (our affectionate nickname), an extraordinary trio of printmakers made up of Deborah Lader, founder and director of The Chicago Printmakers Collaborative, her mother Carol Lader and Carol’s sister (Deborah’s aunt) Janet Imerman, have set new benchmarks for printmaking zeal in my studio. These remarkable young people stepped off the Chicago-Granada flight (Janet was actually coming straight through from Los Angeles) at midday last Monday, put down their bags in the Gallinero, rested for a whole hour and then proceeded to my studio to begin making prints.
